A New Conference Schedule-Selection Tool

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA —The International Society of Automation (ISA) introduces PathFinder, a unique selection tool designed to assist ISA Automation Week attendees in developing a personalized conference schedule based upon individual job function and professional goals.

ISA Automation Week 2010 is scheduled for 4-7 October at the Westin Galleria Hotel in Houston, Texas, USA,.

PathFinder targets five professional groups:

* Engineers
* Technicians
* Management
* Marketing
* Academia/R&D/Scientists

PathFinder allows attendees to navigate their way through dozens of conference sessions covering seven technical tracks: Automation and Control, Energy, Environmental, Human Asset Optimization, Safety, Security, and Wireless and Networking.

While all sessions in general appeal to automation professionals across all functions, each session has been identified as containing content specifically for one or more job functions, or career “paths.”

The technical program is available online at www.isaautomationweek.org/ and illustrates sessions and options for each technical track.

Using the PathFinder tool, attendees will be able to personalize a conference agenda to help them gain knowledge and insight into a broad variety of topics pertaining to their job functions. In addition, conferees can choose to build their schedules based upon a particular technical track or combination of tracks.

“An engineer at a power plant, for example, can look at the conference schedule and select sessions in the Energy Track for an in-depth look at today’s energy topics relevant to his industry. He can also choose to follow the Engineer Path; where he might attend a Smart Grid panel discussion in the Security Track, an alarm management session in the Safety Track, a social networking session in the Human Asset Optimization Track, and so on,” said ISA Automation Week Program Committee Co-chair, Gerald Cockrell of Indiana State University.

“In a tough economy, it can sometimes be hard to justify attending a technical conference, especially if the program is vague and not clearly defined. ISA Automation Week’s strong technical program clearly outlines the content and purpose of each session, and PathFinder easily identifies who benefits from attending it, making the approval and justification process for both the employer and employee easier,” Cockrell concluded.

ISA Automation Week is a content-rich automation conference spanning 2 ½ days of technical sessions, includes two keynote addresses, networking and social events, and boasts over 10,000 net square feet of technical exhibits featuring 100+ exhibitors.

Conference registration also includes hospitality, meals, and more.

Register on-lone at www.isaautomationweek.org/register or call ISA for assistance at +1 919-990-9406.

About ISA
Founded in 1945, the International Society of Automation (www.isa.org) is a leading, global, nonprofit organization that is setting the standard for automation by helping over 30,000 worldwide members and other professionals solve difficult technical problems, while enhancing their leadership and personal career capabilities. Based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, ISA develops standards; certifies industry professionals; provides education and training; publishes books and technical articles; and hosts conferences and exhibitions for automation professionals. ISA is the founding sponsor of the Automation Federation (www.automationfederation.org).

Research Triangle Park NC, USA – The ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute (WCI) announced the formal launch of ISA-100.11a certification services. With official testing of devices completed in late June 2010, participating suppliers can now offer ISA-100.11a-certified products.

ISA-100.11a certification testing is being conducted for the WCI by National Technical Systems, Inc. (NTS), an independent third-party engineering, testing and certification company.

Notable among suppliers in this initial launch is Nivis LLC, earning certification for their ISA-100.11a communication protocol stack.

Nivis, a leader in secure, open standard wireless sensing and control networks, is the first to have an ISA-100.11a-certified protocol stack—enabling integration of ISA-100.11a wireless communication technology into real-world industrial plant applications.

“This is a significant milestone for WCI and the ISA100 Standard. WCI conformance testing services provide a vital link between the standards development process and implementation of the resulting standard in the marketplace. Conformance testing provides assurances to end users that registered ISA-100.11a devices will interoperate and adhere to their requirements,” said Andre Ristaino, managing director of WCI.

“We ran rigorous tests on devices submitted in June using the WCI test kits and are pleased with the results, especially having had several of the first devices meet the ISA-100.11a requirements” said Osman Sakr, CTO of National Technical Systems.

“We look forward to testing additional products as they become available.”

Manufacturers are expected to make their own product announcements in the coming weeks. These will be in addition to the recent announcements from Honeywell and Yokogawa highlighting ISA-100.11a-compliant products at their respective user conferences.

“It is and has always been our mission to support our members with their adoption and implementation of the ISA-100.11a wireless standard,” continued Ristaino.

“As new products pass certification, we look forward to seeing the first commercial installations of industrial wireless systems that demonstrate the scalability, reliability, and performance benefits of the ISA-100.11a standard.”

With a planned maintenance review underway, the ISA-100.11a standard is expected to be submitted to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for approval in early 2011.

Certified products already deployed can maintain compliance with a simple, over-the-air firmware upgrade provided by the vendors—a clear example of one of the future-proof benefits of the standard.

The ISA-100.11a industrial wireless networking standard is the first in the ISA100 family of standards. This wireless mesh network standard protocol helps supplier companies build interoperable wireless automation control products. As a result, manufacturing sites are able to create, modify, optimize, and scale a wireless network quickly, cost-effectively, and seamlessly.

Planned additions to the ISA100 family of standards include support for backhaul functionality, factory automation, and other key-use cases.

The DOE on Cyber Security: Covered by ISA POWID Symposium Keynotes

Research Triangle Park NC, USA (11 June 2010) – Cyber security progress at the US Department of Energy (DOE), the forces that will shape US energy policy development, and the dollars and jobs at stake were the hot topics covered by three keynote speakers at the 53rd ISA POWID Symposium, just completed in Las Vegas, Nevada, 6-11 June 2010.

Henry (Hank) Kenchington, deputy assistant secretary for research and development for the DOE’s Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability, announced that the department, working closely with power-generation end users and vendors, has completed the first milestones in its cyber security testing and pre-qualification plan for automated power technologies such as Smart Grid and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.

Kenchington shared with the conference attendees some lessons the DOE learned as its team developed the plan.

Foremost is that public-private collaboration, critical to building effective grid operational security, must be done within a strategically planned framework.

Aligning activities to a common goal not only enhances success, he said, but also helps stimulate investments in control systems security. He added that the DOE’s $4.5 billion from the 2009 Recovery Act that will be used for Smart Grid will be matched by $4.5 billion in private-sector investments.

Another lesson, Kenchington said, is that even with testing and pre-qualifying systems prior to deployment, 100% security is not possible. He pointed out that the electric grid in the US consists of over 200,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines, thousands of generation plants, millions of digital controls, and over 1,800 entities that own and operate portions of the system. These factors make securing the electric grid a formidable task. To aid the mission, he urged performance-based standards that can provide agility to address rapidly evolving technologies and threats, and that are graded security.

Kenchington leads research and development activities to enhance the reliability, security, and efficiency of the US electricity delivery system. He also directs the $3.4 billion Smart Grid Investment Grant program to upgrade the nation’s power grid with advanced digital communications. In 2003, he lead the development of the national SCADA Test Bed program to enhance the cyber security of control systems. The program has conducted more than 30 vulnerability assessments of SCADA systems, leading to the development of 12 next-generation, hardened systems which are now being deployed to better secure the nation’s power grid against cyber attacks.

Tim Roxey, manager of Critical Infrastructure Protection for the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), spoke on the increased importance of automation in power generation.

He highlighted four key themes that will drive modern energy policy in the US . They include the need for a mix of resources for energy generation, technology developments, policy measures, and the public’s growing awareness of energy issues.

He outlined NERC’s cyber security risk preparedness assessment, as well as the company’s ongoing risk assessment efforts.

Roxey is responsible for development and execution of NERC’s key critical infrastructure protection initiatives, such cyber security risk preparedness assessment and other continuous risk assessment efforts.

He also acts as a key coordination point for North American government officials and is a member of the Electricity Sector Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ES-ISAC).

Roxey has more than 30 years of computer-related experience, was a lead author on the nuclear sector’s cyber security standards, and is former chairman of the Nuclear Information Technology Strategic Leadership’s (NITSL) standing committee on cyber security.

Christopher Guith, vice president for policy at the Institute for 21st Century Energy for the US Chamber of Commerce, continued the theme of US energy security at the Power Industry Division’s Honors and Awards luncheon.

He said the Chamber plays a key role in addressing the issue of developing energy policies with members of the US Congress.

He explained that the urgency of needing sound energy policies is underscored by the fact that 380-plus energy projects have been delayed or canceled, more than 130 renewable-energy projects are already under development, $560 billion in investments could be affected, and 250,000 direct jobs could be involved.

Guith is responsible for developing and implementing the Institute’s policies and initiatives as they apply to the legislative, executive, and regulatory bodies of the federal and state governments. Previously, he served as the deputy assistant secretary for nuclear energy at the DOE, where he worked to develop the administration’s nuclear energy policy and coordinated the DOE’s interactions with the US Congress, stakeholders, and the media.

He also served as the deputy assistant secretary for Congressional Affairs at the DOE, focusing on energy policy. While at the DOE, he was a chief representative of the administration during the drafting and debate of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

Symposium attendee, Dr. Peter Fuhr, CEO, Wi-Fi Sensors, Inc., commented, “The keynote speakers’ complimentary perspectives on issues that directly matter to the power industry reinforced POWID’s needs and goals. Dr. Kenchington’s view on what needs to be accomplished regarding the all-important cyber security matters for power were delivered in a clear and concise manner. To have his comments followed up with Tim Roxey on how the combined government-private sector is to work to achieve goals made for an excellent presentation.”

John Plenge of GE Energy commented, “I thought the keynote speakers were outstanding. They were really a hit to kick off the symposium.”

The speaker engagements were arranged by the Automation Federation.

ISA’s Power Industry Division (POWID) holds a symposium annually at various locations across the US and Canada . In addition to technical sessions, the conference hosts various interest groups’ meetings, panel discussions, ISA power plant standards working group meetings, vendor exhibits, and training sessions.

More information about this year’s symposium can be found at www.isa.org/powersymp.

POWID is organized within the Industry and Sciences Department of ISA. The Division is a recognized leader in developing and communicating the highest standards of information exchange, practices, environmental awareness, and safety of information exchange among engineers, scientists, technicians, students/universities, and management who are involved in instrumentation and control as it relates to the production of electricity. The primary focal point of POWID is to advance the interests and concerns of its members.
